New Delhi, June 11 Prof P K Abdul Azis, who took over today as the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), is an eminent ecologist and educationist. Earlier, he has served as the Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) for three years. He succeeds Naseem Ahmad, who had resigned on April 7, 2007. The new initiatives undertaken by him at CUSAT, including Modern Marine Engineering Campus, Department Aerospace Technology, post-graduation course in Nano Science, and Rajiv Gandhi Chair in Contemporary Studies have earned him a reputation. He has 77 research papers to his credit published in various journals/ books/ proceedings.
Prof.Azis had his early education completed in the Government Primary, Upper Primary and Higher Secondary School, Thodupuzha in Kerala. He is an alumnus of the U C College, Aluva and St Albert’s College, Ernakulam. He obtained his Masters from the Department of Marine Biology and Oceanography of CUSAT and Ph D and D Sc from the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala. Shyla P Azeez is his wife, Suhana his daughter doing her final year in Homoeopathy and Aadil his son doing his B Tech (Bio-medical).
Prof Abdul Azis has 27 years of extremely active and productive career working in the Kerala Agricultural University as assistant professor; in the University of Kerala as UGC research associate; lecturer, reader and professor and in the Research and Development Centre of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as Chairman and Vice Chairman at the Department of Ecology and Marine Biology. Prof Azis has spent his most fruitful years in the University of Kerala working on the ecology of diverse types of aquatic ecosystems such as coastal waters and beaches, estuaries, freshwater lakes, rivers and the impact of river basin projects and other human activities on ecosystems and their sustainability.
There his work earned national and international recognition and was instrumental in getting substantial funding from UGC, ISRO, NTPC and STEC. His work in Saudi Arabia on the ecological issues caused and faced by the seawater desalination and power industries was also globally recognized by the desalination industry. He was a leading ecology consultant for urban development projects and desalination and power industry. The University of Kerala awarded him the most coveted degree of Doctor of Science (D Sc) for his contributions in the field of ecology in 2004.
As a University Professor, Dr.Abdul Azis served in several expert committees of the Government.of Kerala on environment-related matters. As a research guide, he successfully supervised the Ph D programmes of several candidates and it is worth- mentioning that the first thesis submitted under him was selected as the best Ph D thesis from Indian Universities in 1993 and given the Jawaharlal Nehru award.
As Vice Chancellor of the CUSAT in the last three years, Prof.Abdul Azis provided effective leadership in regaining the S&T focus of the university which is face to face with a historic moment of getting transformed into an Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST).
Prof. Abdul Azis organized the first ever ‘International Education Meet’ at the instance of the Government of Kerala in February 2006, and the Indo-Australian Round Table on Equity and Social Justice in May 2006. Prof. Azis remained associated with a number of Social and Scientific Organizations in Kerala, besides membership in International Scientific Societies as member and office bearer.
Prof.Abdul Azis received the Honorary Fellowship of the Indian Zoological Society in 2006 and the Society of Fisheries Technologist (India) in 2005 for his outstanding contributions to Science. He is member in the Court of the Indian Institution of Science representing the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
