Rana Bhagwan Das
Acting chief justice of Supreme Court of Pakistan

By Kamini Jha, Lucknow

The  designated  acting chief  justice of  the  Supreme  Court of  Pakistan Rana  Bhawan Das had  spent  about  a fortnight  in Lucknow  taking part in religious  discourse and often reciting  Gita at  friend’s place. (  By the time you  get to see  this  piece, Das was sworn in as acting chief  justice of Pakistan’s  highest judicial court). From  March  4 to March  14, very few  people had any inkling about his stay  in the  city but once  General Pervez Mushraff  sacked the  chief  Justice of  Pakistan’s  Supreme Court, people came to know about  Justice Das.

Having spurned the  request of  intelligence agency    for  a security cover,  the  acting chief justice of  Pakistan’s  Supreme Court,  was  moving from Kaiserbagh, Alambagh to Krishnanagar  and  other  localities as  guest. On March 18, a few newsmen reached his Kaiserbagh abode, to seek an interview with him.  “Dada Tahan Saun Akhbar Bara Gehai Chenai Chahinta?” asked his host in Sindhi. Das also replied in Sindhi saying “I am here on a purely private visit and want to attend “satsang”.

When newsmen asked  him  about the  justification of sacking of chief  justice of  Pakistan’s Supreme Court, Das declined to comment . He merely quipped that  he was not  posted  with the full  facts and thus unable to comment on  it.

Soon his host’s place started getting stream of visitors and incessant telephone calls. The acting chief justice had a booking on March 22 but he was finding it difficult  to  stay any longer. He immediately left the place promising his hosts and friends to come again, said  Mukesh .

This was  not the first visit of Justice Das  to this place, said one of his hosts . Das  was  so  unassuming that no  could  realise  that he  was  holding such a high position in

Pakistn’s  judiciary, said  his  host.  An erudite scholar  in Islamic  study, Das told his friends in  Lucknow  that  he never encountered  any discrimination in Pakistan. Incidentally Das is the second  non Muslim to hold this position in Pakistan.

On the day Justice  Das was sworn in  as  acting chief  justice  of  Pakistan’s  Supreme  Court, several houses in Kaiserbagh and other  localities had been listening  news about his swearing-in ceremony.
